Gold-mining residues typically fall into one of three categories: slime (particle size of about 75% passing 74 μm), sand (about 10–20% passing 74 μm), and waste rock. Since the slime and sand have been previously processed, it typically has a low gold grade (<1.0 g/t) and will provide relatively low recovery efficiencies, in the order of 50%.
